Digital Printing

Digital printing is the way printing is done now. Offset printing will be with us for many years to come until certain technological problems are overcome, then, like all things, it’s season will be done. Offset printing still makes up the lion’s share of print volume but digital is the reigning prince of the world of print.

Small Format Digital Printing

Small Format typically means black on white or color printing done on a 13″ x 19″ inch sheet of paper or smaller. Everything about the creation and production processes is geared for the eventual output size. From the software used for the design, the rip devices for file processing to the construction of the very large, very expensive digital machinery and toners used to output the finished images.

Large Format Digital Printing

Large format printing, also commonly referred to as Wide Format Printing is the fastest growing segment of digital printing. Printed on scores of different substrates, Large Format can be up to 60″ wide and hundreds of feet long if necessary. WF image ouput is much slower than small format output rates but that’s changing rapidly as WF looks to catch up with it’s smaller format cousin. Wide-Format is, by default, produced from rolls of substrate material but the rise of flat-bed output devices is rapidly looking to replace the roll as the defacto standard. Flat-bed devices can print directly on almost any kind of substrate (think plywood, plastic, metal) eliminating the need to affix the print to a more rigid backer (foamcore, gatorboard, plywood).

Grand Format Digital Printing

Digital Printing that exceeds the 60″ width limitation of Large Format output devices has crossed over into the realm of Grand Format Printing. Billboards, larger real estate signage, and over-sized banners would fall under this heading. Digital machinery for this non-commodity classification costs millions of dollars, and the finished product can be pricey, but the quality is outstanding and let’s face it, when you need a “World Cahampions” banner measuring 20′ x 30′, it’s worth the price!
